A true visionary-- Senior Javiera Klenner gives her final capstone presentation to friends and members of the Capstone Steering Committee on May 24. Her project, entitled “Gestational Iron Deficiency Anemia: Filial Ramifications and Treatment,” looked at the impact of iron deficiency on pregnant women.

Awarded with grace-- Science teacher Tim Barron accepts the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Educator Award on May 3. Barron has been a science teacher at the high school for 18 years and continues to encourage women to try computer science.

Almost all summer program applications are due prior to May 1 and the sooner that students apply, the higher chance there will be a vacancy in the program.

Dancing for donations-- Six-year old Connecticut Children’s Medical Center patient Joey Divito and mother Stephanie Divito speak to students, teachers and parents about his rare condition and experience at the hospital. Code problem-- Junior Elizabeth Cho and sophomore Pooja Swami work on programming a robot in Java for this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition during a Workshop Wednesday afer school. Cho has been on the robotics team for the past three years and is currently one of the two Programming Commit- tee Heads. Her main focus is working on programming the robot for use at competitions.

Psyched to learn-- Psychology teacher Michael Baxer lectures on inadequate retrieval cues to semester one psychology students. Psychology is one of the second semester electives offered and is consistently a popular choice amongst students, according to counselor Rebecca Gorman.

A cut above the rest-- Senior Daulton Upchurch demonstrates how to cut a timber frame with a beam cutter at the 2016 Capstone Exhibition. For his capstone project, Upchurch created a timber frame pergola that was donated to West Woods Upper Elementary School. Upchurch was one of over 80 students who showcased their work at the exhibition.
