Now that sports games at FHS have moved indoors, the girls basketball team is gearing up for a competitive season on the court. They have a tough schedule, with some of their key games set to take place against teams like Northwest Catholic and Bristol Central. Despite tough competition, the girls aim to represent the Riverhawks in the FHS gym this winter and defend Farmington’s basketball reputation.
The team is returning with largely the same roster this year, as they only graduated 3 seniors last season. They also have some promising talent coming from this year’s freshman class, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see some of the sophomores step into a bigger role this season as well. According to Senior Sydnie Smith, the team’s upperclassmen are also looking forward to playing a bigger role in leading the team to victory this year.
“Many of us have been playing together for years now, and we are ready to take on whoever comes our way,” said Smith.
Although games didn’t start until mid December, the girls have been getting touches in since the summer. Returning players have participated in a 3v3 summer league and 5v5 fall ball against other teams in their league, giving them a great opportunity to restore chemistry with each other and gain momentum going into the season.
“[This hard work has] not only elevated our game, but we also started building those strong team connections that are so important while playing a sport,” stated Smith.
In mid-November, they took part in a 3-day pre-season clinic with the boys basketball coach, Coach Arch. The main focus was to build team chemistry and get the girls back in the mindset of putting in hard work to get results. Even though they had been participating in games and practices throughout the summer and fall, this clinic was a solidifying opportunity to have all the players come together and start preparing for the rigor of the upcoming season.
“This was a great way for us to see the potential in our program, while also giving us a chance to warm up for the season,” stated Smith.
Between playing together in past seasons, spending the past few months doing clinics, scrimmages, and pre-season practices, along with having shared goals in mind, the girls are building a very close-knit community with one another.
“We truly are a family, we all love the sport, and we all want our team to succeed,” stated Smith.
The girls have a competitive season ahead of them, and they are hitting the ground running to make sure they advance as far as possible. You can find all information on the team’s schedule, roster, and other announcements through their instagram page (@fhs_girlsbball), or the CIAC website.
