The most popular TV Show on Disney Plus is back with a second season. After ‘The Mandalorian’ premiered its first season in November 2019, it received positive ratings, earning 93 percent from Rotten Tomatoes. The first episode of season two was released on October 30, 2020 and it’s even bigger. Business Insider reports that it’s the top TV Show in the world, surpassing Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ as the most streamed show in the US. With the pandemic shutting nearly everything down, more people have been subscribing to streaming services, and binging the latest shows. Disney announced they now have over sixty million subscribers, many of whom helped ‘The Mandalorian’ become the success it is.
The action packed show was created by Jon Favreau and takes place after ‘Return of the Jedi’ in the Star Wars universe. The title character, played by Pedro Pascal, is a bounty hunter who receives the high paying task of capturing a rare and powerful creature. This creature turns out to be The Child, or as many people call him, Baby Yoda. After completing the task, the Mandalorian regrets his decision of giving Baby Yoda to a client who is part of the Empire. He steals Baby Yoda back, and starts his journey running away from the Imperialists. In season two, the Mandalorian works to reunite Baby Yoda with his own kind, so he starts searching for the Jedi. The show releases a new episode of season two every Friday and the season finale is set to premiere on December 18.
Season two finished filming less than a week before the Coronavirus caused everything to shut down, allowing it to be released deep into the pandemic. Season three is already on schedule to start filming before the end of the year according to director and producer Jon Favreau. In an interview with Variety, Favreau spoke on the possibility of filming mid-pandemic. He said, “Oftentimes we have a lot of characters wearing masks and we also have a lot of digital work that augments things. So we’re a show that’s probably well- equipped to be flexible based on the protocols that are emerging surrounding work restarting.” A lot of work that is put into ‘The Mandalorian’ also has to do with visual effects that can be done in a covid safe environment. Favreau said, “I feel very grateful that we’re able to be able to work remotely, because of the nature of the technology we’re dealing with.” The production’s hard work both in their California Studio, and at home, certainly paid off.
Part of the show’s huge success has to do with the special effects and detailed graphics on characters such as Baby Yoda. The clear and realistic images only add to the audience’s attachment. Favreau, who also directed ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Iron Man 2’, talked about how his work with those movies helped make ‘The Mandalorian’ what it is. He said, “I learned a lot from my experience over at Marvel, where it was very organic, how it would evolve.” He added, “The key here is keep maintaining the quality and never scaling to the point that we’re losing sight of what’s important to us and what people like about the show.” Season two definitely gives viewers more of what they liked best in the first season. When the show first came out, its audience fell in love with the cute creature popularly known as Baby Yoda. In season two, more scenes focused on the character, his expressions, and his comedic actions to give the audience even more of what they liked.
Without a doubt the show has thrilled all viewers, including critics. Between the thirteen episodes released so far, ten of them received 90 percent or higher on Rotten Tomatoes, and three of those ten earned an impressive 100 percent. With only a couple episodes needing to be released for season two, fans will be eagerly waiting for more of this widely popular show.
