Over the course of the fall season, the Farmington High School (FHS) Boys and Girls Crew teams traveled to compete at various regattas throughout New England along with hosting regattas here in Farmington.
Some highlights from the season include:
The Guardian Chase regatta in Glastonbury which took place on September 23, 2023. The girls first varsity (1V) boat placed 3rd, and the boys 1V boat placed 4th. Additionally, the girls and boys junior varsity (JV) boats placed within the top 2.
At The Head of the Horseman Regatta in Glastonbury on October 28th, girls 1V placed 1st and girls 2V placed 2nd, with boys 1V placing 2nd as well.
At the Haley Petit Cup on October 28th against Miss Porter’s, the girls 1V won.
The love of competition and sense of community runs deep within the team, both collectively and on an individual level.
Sophomore rower Sara Devlin explained “It makes all my hard work pay off and I like working together with my team for a common purpose, which makes me feel like an important part of the FHS crew community”.
The team worked hard this season on blending and team cohesion, both on and off the water, and the results have been paid off, with many successful races for all boats throughout the season. For example, sophomore Vivien Hua’s boat placed 1st at the Glastonbury regatta. It was an unexpected result due to challenging competition.
According to Hua, it was “A really happy moment when our coach announced it to us, and we couldn’t contain our excitement!”
There are also themed regattas like the annual Pumpkinhead Regatta, where senior night is celebrated and boats dress up in team costumes. It took place on November 4th, and it was a clean sweep with all girls and boys varsity and JV boats placing 1st. As for costumes, girls boats dressed up as smurfs, frat boys, stores at the mall, and disney heroes/villains. Boys boats dressed up in Batman, Fortnite, skiing, and sports costumes.
Hua added, “We all had a lot of fun rowing knowing that it’s our last regatta, and it was a really nice conclusion to the season.”
