The Farmington girls volleyball team worked hard this year to accomplish their goal of a successful season. They finished out their regular season with 22 wins and 4 losses, culminating with winning the CIAC state championships.
After a rough season last year, the team used the off season to improve their skills and teamwork. Senior Brooke Jones stated, “Winning the state championship was the perfect way to put an exclamation mark on our season. After a poor performance last season, the team collectively changed their mindsets and their work ethics. Everyone worked 10X harder. We also connected more as a team, with tons of pasta parties, team breakfasts, and get-togethers. We were together pretty much every day of the season. I think that those two factors led us to success this year.”
On November 18th 2023, the Farmington High School (FHS) girls volleyball team took on St. Josephs in the state final to bring home the win in the state championship final. The teams played to 5 sets and Farmington came on top with a 3-2 win. The girls pushed through with the match lasting 3 hours to lead the River Hawks to victory for the first time in 7 years.
All players were key players in this game. While it was a team effort, Junior Lucy Scudder earned the title of Most Valuable Player of the CIAC tournament.
“It feels so great to accomplish our state championship win with this team, the support and connection between us has been outstanding. In the end, our hard work and determination showed in our tournament run”, Scudder said.
The graduating class this year was a group of 5 dedicated, supportive and powerful seniors. Seniors Aubrey Zadrozny, Isabella George, Brook Jones, Abby Schipper, and Sarah Bertolette.
“Being a part of FGVB has truly been one of the best experiences of my high school career. It has fostered such close friendships within the team and have given me my best friends. I am forever grateful for these girls and so so proud of all we have accomplished this season!” said Senior Abby Schipper.
Juniors are excited about the season next year to carry their leadership and skill over to their senior season.
Junior Kiera Wilkes said, “We have a lot of athleticism and we all plan on working hard this offseason to come back just as strong as we left, we plan on having another very successful season. The seniors set a great example on how to lead a team to a victory, and we have a lot of potential and strength in the underclassmen that will carry out great leadership next season.”
