The rising number of Coronavirus cases in New York and California have allowed for the United States Navy hospital ships to take patients aboard for treatment.

The USNS Comfort arrived in New York City Pier 90 on March 30 to help relieve nearby hospitals of their non-coronavirus patients
and medical cases. However, due to recent changes in spikes in cases, The Comfort will now be accepting severe corona cases to fill 500 of its 1000 beds.

The ship holds 1000 hospital beds and has 12 equipped operating rooms. The ship also holds intensive care units, with ventilations.

This use of the ship is hoped to relieve hospitals of the overflow and slowly stop the spread.

With California’s growing number of cases, the USNS Mercy docked in Los Angeles to also relieve nearby hospitals.

Although Washington State currently has the highest number of cases on the West Coast, it is expected that California will need the extra support of the Mercy in the upcoming days and weeks.
