Night of music planned for senior citizens

Jazz, Acoustic, and Strings Night will be held on Friday, June 1, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in the cafeteria. This will be the ninth annual concert event of its kind. Students participating in the Jazz Band or Chamber Stings will be playing for senior citizens from Middlewoods of Newington, and it will be the last concert set out for the public by the music department.

Students have played for senior citizens in the past, like in an event planned by Rita Monahan as part of her capstone project, in which students played for members of the Brookdale senior living community. TRI-AM members planned the event, with hopes that a second event for the elderly would be beneficial to the community. There will be an estimated 100 to 150 senior citizens in the audience, following the precedent of years past.

Sophomore Jaden Drozd participated in a similar event last year with the Jazz Band.

“I enjoy being apart of the Jazz Band. It is such a fun group of students to be around and I enjoy the opportunity to play with them during the week and at performances”, Drozd said.

Band teacher Thomas Johnston conducts the Jazz Band and acts as a host for the event. Shannon Prouty, who began teaching orchestra as of 2017, will also be participating in the event as a conductor. Prouty hopes to play “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” by Mozart and “Phantasy Quintet” by Vaughan Williams.

Prouty considered what the night means to her and her students.

“This event is a special way for our students to provide a fun evening out for local senior citizens. Students will get to see firsthand how playing music in an informal setting can be just as meaningful as a formal concert,” Prouty said.

Guests will be offered an assortment of refreshments to purchase, such as drinks and baked goods. Funds raised from the event will go to the Music Honors Society and will help pay for future fundraisers, as well as concerts and events.
