After decades of teaching at Farmington High School (FHS), Mr. O’Connell, special education teacher, is officially retiring. For the past thirty years he has dedicated his time and energy to students and families and now as he moves on to new things, the FHS community will undoubtedly feel his absence.
O’Connell currently co-teaches American Studies, but over the years has been a part of many departments, including History, English, Science and Special Education. Always bringing the same passion no matter the subject, his willingness to step in wherever he was needed is just one example of his dedication to students and the Farmington community.
“My favorite part of being here has been the movement. I’m never bored, and I’m always excited to come here because I love the people I work with,” O’Connell said.
His words reflect the passion he’s brought to the job every day by finding joy in teaching and in the relationships he’s built along the way. It’s clear that for him, the heart of Farmington High School has always been its people.
His humor and ability to balance learning with laughter are traits that bring a sense of comfort and fun to his classroom and make students look forward to coming to class.
“If I can make a student laugh or make them confident about what they do, that’s absolutely my favorite part of my job,” said O’Connell.
Students are not the only ones who will feel the impact of his absence. Teachers and staff identify O’Connell as someone you can always count on, who consistently shows up for those around him.
“Overall he’s a great guy and he’s always asking me ways he can help me move my students forward,” stated Mrs. Sidoruk, English teacher.
While the halls of FHS might feel a little emptier without him, his impact will continue to echo through the lives of the students he taught and the colleagues he worked alongside. Congrats on your retirement Mr. O’Connell!
