Mock Trial is a club that prepares high schoolers for law-related careers in the future. During tournaments, students participate in competitions against other schools where they simulate legal cases at real courthouses.
On Thursday, December 7, 2023, the Farmington High School (FHS) Mock Trial team executed its first scrimmage of the year. The team practiced running through their entire case to prepare for their December 15 tournament at New Britain Judicial District.
During the scrimmage, senior presidents Nishesh Nath and Siddhant Gururaj presented on cross and direct examinations, as well as objections, and gave students lots of tips on strengthening their cases.
“The scrimmage was fun because it was our first attempt at everything. We were able to get a better understanding of how to time our cross-examinations. Because a lot of the witnesses were underclassmen, they also got a chance to experience how a real trial would go,” stated Nath.
The opportunity to practice provided beneficial insight for future tournaments.
Freshman Daniel Walsdorf elaborated saying, “The scrimmage was really helpful to me because it was the first time I was able to go through a trial in real-time.”
In addition to providing feedback and insight, the scrimmage was an opportunity for the team to bond.
Sophomore Ashley Yu shared, “We were able to establish very nice team bonding while also being able to have a good run-through of the trial as a whole. The scrimmage allowed us to learn from mistakes and we felt a lot more knowledgeable overall afterward.”
If you are interested in joining Mock Trial in the future, you can email the presidents or attend a meeting after school. Mock trial meets in room 810 on Mondays. Be sure to follow @fhsfuturelawyers on Instagram for any club updates.
