On October 2nd, the Tri-M, Music Honor Society advisors announced the names of the students who will be taking on leadership roles for the 2023-2024 school year. These students previously filled out applications to take on challenges in musical opportunities outside of what goes on during the typical 7-hour school day.
Tri-M is for music students in grades 11 or 12 who want to extend their talents through performances, community service opportunities, and building better relationships with their peers.
Positions that were named are as follows: Ria Verma as President, Tyler Hodgman as Vice President, Safia Lee as secretary, and Divya Saravanan as Treasurer. When asked about why she applied, President, Ria Verma stated “I could help Tri-M members experience the joy that comes with performing and sharing their love for music with the community.”
Throughout the school year, students must earn community service hours and credits that are specific to Tri-M only that are developed through optional performances and other forms of giving back to the community . They also contribute to the music department and school community through different projects throughout the year. “A multicultural concert, ice cream socials, and a Regionals Prep workshop led by seniors.” Verma shared when asked about her new ideas for the year.
This goes along with the annual Poinsettia Sale hosted by the honor society to raise money for both the music department and students themselves so they can save up for upcoming events such as field trips, and Connecticut Music Educators Association opportunities including Northern Regionals and All State.
Recently, on October 24th, Tri-M students went on a field trip to Winding Trails as well. They split into small groups to work on team-building exercises to improve their collaboration and teamwork skills, all to prepare them as members of Tri-M for this school year.
The honor society meets once a month on Wednesdays at 7:00 AM in the band room, room 180. During meetings, students discuss upcoming events and opportunities music-wise for FHS students. Students who apply must be in a music ensemble – this includes any level of band, orchestra, or chorus, and have an A average in their music class as well as a B average overall. Applicants are also required to submit a video showing themselves singing or playing an instrument through Flip Grid. “I highly encourage everyone who is eligible to apply for Tri-M as it is a great opportunity to grow in music and performance skills and to meet other FHS music students!” Verma added.
