Tampa Bay Buccaneers crowned Super Bowl 55 champions
February 12, 2021
In the fifty-fifth annual Super Bowl, the number one seed from the American Football Conference(AFC) Kansas City Chiefs took on the number five seed in the National Football Conference(NFC) Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers won the match 31-9.
The Chiefs had the best record in the AFC standing at 14 wins and two losses. Claiming the first seed in the conference, the Chiefs guaranteed themselves a first round bye in the playoffs. In the Divisional Round, the Chiefs beat the Cleveland Browns 22-17 to send them into the Conference Championship. In the Conference Championship, they played the Buffalo Bills and won 38- 24, sending them to the Super Bowl. Throughout the season, the Chiefs handled COVID-19 infections and new protocols. Despite this, they were able to win nearly every game this season.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers did not live up to expectations in the regular season. With a record of 11 wins and five losses, the Buccaneers were expected to dominate this season with the addition of quarterback Tom Brady and arguably one of the deepest offensive rosters in the league.
The Buccaneers were able to claim a Wild Card spot in the playoffs. In the Wild Card round, they beat the Washington Football Team 31-23, sending them into the Divisional Round. In The Divisional Round, the Bucs went against the New Orleans Saints, beating them 30-20. The Bucs then played against the Green Bay Packers in a legendary Brady versus Rogers matchup.
Brady and the Bucs defeated the Green Bay Packers in the Conference Championship 31- 26 sending them to the Super Bowl. Going into the big game, each team had glaring strengths and weaknesses. The Chiefs strength is their passing game. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes as well as wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce have found success on the field every game with yards and receptions, scoring touchdown after touchdown. The Chiefs defense as well is ranked 10 in the league, adding to the fire power of the reigning Super Bowl 54 champions. The Buccaneers have grown chemistry throughout the year between arguably the greatest quarterback of all time Tom Brady and a loaded receiving core. Despite this, their offense is no match to that of the Kansas City Chiefs. In order for the Bucs to match up with the Chiefs, they would have to do it defensively, keeping Mahomes off the field.
The Chiefs came out slow at the beginning of the game and maintained a similar pace throughout. The Buccaneers dominated defensively keeping Mahomes off the field, allowing Brady to succeed. Throughout the playoffs, the Chiefs offensive line was riddled with injury, and it showed as Mahomes was struggling to get settled and make big plays.
Brady totaled 201 yards, three touchdowns, and a passer rating of 125.8. Mahomes threw for 270 yards with two interceptions. Brady was awarded Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) and now has won more Super Bowls individually than the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers (leaders in franchise Super Bowl wins). This marks Brady’s fifth Super Bowl MVP award.
Brady is arguably the greatest football player of all time with seven Super Bowl rings, five Super Bowl MVP awards, three NFL MVP awards during his 21 seasons. The Buccaneers brought home the Super Bowl 55 title, their first franchise title since 2003. This was also the first Super Bowl that was played and won at a home field as it took place in Tampa. Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians became the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl.
