Girls’ field hockey looks to turn season around

With a record of nine wins and two losses, the girls’ field hockey team is heading in the right direction after last year’s season of five wins, 12 losses and three ties.

The strength of the team is definitely their experience. Having 21 seniors this year, the older Some of the key players of the team are semore consistently,” Coach Jennifer Wood said.      According to Ruot, they have been making a huge push to cooperate as a team, trying to increase their bond as a whole so they can win most games and be “terrific.” players are looking to carry the load of the team.

“We look to improve greatly upon last year, starting with a better regular season record, then focusing on making it further in the state tournament,” senior captain Hope Ruot said.

In doing so, the girls need to come together as a team to complete their goals.

“The biggest challenge has really been getting the team to really gel on and off the field, and when they do that they are terrific, they just need to do seniors Eunice Ham, captains Alex Austin and Elizabeth Gurski, Brianna Belisle and Katherine Quirk.

Thus far in the season, the team has looked impressive, especially at their Play Day pre-season tournament. The girls went undefeated with a record of five wins and one tie, with goalie Eunice Ham not allowing a single goal during the whole tournament.

“We played really well. It gave us a sense of how good we can be and how far we can make it this season if we play up to our capabilities,” Ham said.

One of the improvements for the team is the new field they play on. After playing on the upper grass fields for years, the girls are adapting quickly to playing on the bottom turf field for their second year in a row. This will lead to better preparation for away games on turf and a much smoother surface to hit the ball on.

Wood said, “I think more of the players are becoming more comfortable and more confident playing on turf. I think you see that in the way they play, go to the ball and the way they approach the game against other teams that do have turf.”
