Winter cheer motivates winter teams
January 15, 2017
The winter cheer team has been practicing to perform at select halftimes during basketball home games as well as at two planned competitions coming up this month. Unfortunately, participation in the competitions have been cancelled. However, the team still looks to keep up the momentum.
“We arrive early in the morning to the competitions and stay there for half a day. In that time, the teams have two to three times to practice their routine before they compete before the judges. ere is usually ten or more teams from different schools that compete in competitions which is why they take a long time,” senior captain Javiera Klenner said.
The team’s routines are all less than three minutes; however, they practice daily to improve.
“In those few seconds, we have to impress a panel of judges that write anything down that they feel is incorrect. After we compete, we catch our breath, go back to where we were sitting before and watch the other teams do their routine,” Klenner said.
According to senior captain Gxila Dorvilus, almost half of the team is completely new to cheer, so the team has been working on building fundamental skills.
“The experience of being on the winter cheer team has been one filled with learning and building. We have all built o of each other’s skills and as a team, improved in many ways, getting closer and having a lot of fun,” freshman Isabella Abreu said.
They hope to keep focus and prepare throughout the season before they compete as a team.
“The winter team has a strong focus on our main competitions. Though we keep our basketball cheers sharp and perfected, we keep our final routine in utmost importance,” Dorvilus said.
Te winter team is different than the fall team. is year, more girls have joined the winter team. In addition, the winter team also participates in both the cheering and competition aspect, while in the fall they only cheer.
