Durant makes Warriors championship favorites
December 10, 2016
Kevin Durant signed with the Golden State Warriors this offseason, joining reigning most valuable player (MVP) Stephen Curry.
After finishing the season with an National Basketball Association (NBA) record of 73-9 but falling short in the NBA Finals by losing to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Warriors still wanted to improve and adding Durant did just that.
The Warriors beat out the likes of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Boston Celtics to sign the former MVP. This came was a shock to many and Durant received a lot of hate for joining the team who beat his former team in the playoffs last year.
Though Kevin Durant caught the big headlines over the offseason, other star players also moved to new teams. Long time Miami Heat member Dwyane Wade and former Celtics star Rajon Rondo joined forces with Jimmy Butler and the Chicago Bulls while AllStar center Al Horford made a big move to the Celtics.
Regarding this season, the Warriors have gotten off to a great start, holding a 18-3 record through 21 games. Durant and Curry are playing great together, averaging 27.3 and 26.9 points per game (PPG) respectively.
The Warriors currently lead the Western Conference, occupying first place. Horford and the Boston Celtics have also gotten off to a strong start. They are 12-9 through 21 games, though Horford suffered a concussion early on in the season.
With Horford healthy, Boston looks to keep their season going strong, currently standing in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The Chicago Bulls have a solid record of 11-10 through 21 games and are currently seventh in the Eastern Conference.
Veteran Dwyane Wade is averaging 19.1 PPG, aiding leading scorer Jimmy Butler (25.6 PPG) lead the Bulls in their fight to take down the Cavaliers. However, falling behind early will make it more difficult for them and they look to get back on track soon. The San Antonio Spurs are keeping a close gap between themselves and the Warriors, starting the season with a 18-4 record through 22 games.
The Spurs will need the playoff experience of new acquisition Pau Gasol and star Kawhi Leonard if they hope to dethrone the Warriors in the West. Can the Warriors continue to keep their egos in check? Can anyone take down the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference? These questions and more will be answered with this NBA season
