NFC struggles continue, AFC race tightens
December 13, 2016
Led by rookie running back (RB) Ezekiel Elliott and star quarterback Dak Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys are on top headed into the final weeks of the professional football season prior to playoffs.
The young rookies have taken the National Football League (NFL) by storm this season. Elliott leads the league in total rushing yards at 1,392 yards through 13 games and is second in the league with 12 rushing touchdowns.
Prescott, on the other hand, has been lights out, completing 67.8 percent of his passes paired with 19 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
With these two stars, combined with one of the best offensive lines in the NFL and elite receivers Dez Bryant and Jason Witten, the Cowboys look ready to make a run for Super Bowl LI. Though the Cowboys are having a season to remember, the rest of the National Football Conference (NFC) is having a disappointing season.
Coming into the season, the Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers were two of the favorites to win the Super Bowl. However, having fallen to 5-7-1 and 7-6 records respectively, they are both fighting for playoff berths.
The Carolina Panthers have also had a disappointing year thus far. Led by reigning Most Valuable Player Cam Newton, the Panthers had all the pieces in place to make another run for the Super Bowl, but, after a slow start to the season, they are in last place in the NFC South division and are on the outside looking in.
The American Football Conference (AFC), except for the 0-13 Cleveland Browns, have many star-studded teams battling it out to make the playoffs.
Headed by future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady, the conference-leading New England Patriots will look to receivers Julian Edelman and Malcolm Mitchell to step up with star tight end Rob Gronkowski out for the remainder of the season after having back surgery.
AFC East division opponents Miami Dolphins looked out of the competition early after a 1-4 start to the regular season, yet have proven to be resilient.
Commanded by RB Jay Ajayi, the Dolphins went on a seven-game winning streak en route to a 8-5 record and are looking to outpace the Denver Broncos for the final Wild Card spot. The Patriots aren’t the only team who look strong.
The Oakland Raiders lead a close three team race for the AFC West division title with an impressive 10-2 record, followed closely by the Kansas City Chiefs (9-3) and defending Super Bowl Champions Denver Broncos (8-4).
The AFC look ready for a tight battle to see who can reach the Super Bowl, while the NFC seem to be a three team race. With three weeks to go, an injury or slip up could change everything.
