Gyzywinski achieves milestone
November 30, 2016
Sophomore Mia Grzywinski was awarded the CT Junior PGA Player of the Year award at the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame and Champions Tribute dinner on November 28.
Grzywinski is the first female golfer in school history to receive this award. Grzywinski finished the CT Junior PGA season ranked number one and was recognized at this dinner for her accomplishments. She has been golfing since she was eight and plays throughout the year, being coached by Suzy Whaley.
“I admire my coach, Suzy Whaley. She’s the one who really got me into golf, and through her I learned to love the sport. Her work with me over the years has taught me to elevate my play in amazing ways,” Grzywinski said.
Grzywinski plays for the girls’ golf team, coached by Student Acticities Director Russ Crist, in addition to participating in the Junior PGA season. During the girls’ golf team’s season, she works with Crist to develop her skills.
“For a junior golfer, this is the biggest achievement you can receive in the state of Connecticut. We are very fortunate to have her as a part of our program. What makes her great is she’s not only a special player but a special person who everyone looks up to for her hard work. It’s great to see that pay off at such a high level,” Crist said.
In addition to Grzywinski’s coaches, her teammates think highly of her on and off the course.
“I am lucky enough to play with Mia during our season. She’s a huge asset to the team and I’m so proud of her for winning Player of the Year,” senior captain Clare Meehan said.
Grzywinski has won numerous tournaments including The Sandri Junior Invitational, Lyman Orchards Junior Open, Cas Coscina Memorial JR Invitational, Fairview Farm Junior Classic and Ryan Lee Memorial Junior Open. She is most proud of her performance in the Hartford Womens’ Open, where she finished 11th overall against some professional golfers. Grzywinski has high hopes for the upcoming season.
“Individually, I want to keep challenging myself and experiment new things so I can learn more about myself as a golfer,” Grzywinski said. After placing second at the Central Connecticut Conference, she aims for a better result in the upcoming season and to make a name for Farmington in the state tournament.
