Volleyball looks to slam competition at states

The boys’ volleyball team ended their season on May 23 with a final record of 9-8. The team will represent the high school in the state playoffs this year.

“Expectations for this year were to win the CCC West Conference for the eighth year in a row; however, we did not accomplish this goal. We also wanted to help the younger players develop and set a foundation for a strong program in the future,” senior captain Matt Lizon said.

The boys managed to meet their goal even though the majority of their starting lineup had graduated. They initially saw this as a rebuilding season, but realized that new members have helped fill the void.

Another aspect is the family atmosphere that they have created. The overall energy that they play with is something that has brought them to be the close group that they are now.

“The team is full of rambunctious kids that love to get hyped up and loud. I can always expect something weird to come out of the group either in practice or in a game,” senior captain Carson Frey said.

The boys’ next goal is to focus on going as far into the tournament as they can. They also want to take the experiences that they’ve gained and use it to improve.

“Once we reach the playoffs, I think our team’s focus and chemistry will improve greatly. Once the state tournament comes I strongly believe our team will shape up and gel together and start winning and playing at a higher caliber,” Lizon said.
