People all across town gathered at the Farmington Polo Grounds on Town Farm Road Saturday, May 21 for the annual Relay For Life of Farmington Valley.

Relay For Life is a 24 hour event by the American Cancer Society where communities have the opportunity to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer and fight back against the disease. The money raised from relays support the research, patient care, advocacy and education missions of the American Cancer Society.

“I love how relay brings the entire community together. It’s a fun day to spend with your friends and family while supporting a great cause,” sophomore Leia Ficks said.

For the past 15 years, the town’s annual relay has been held at the high school. But due to the growing popularity, this year it was held at the larger Polo Grounds.

Relay For Life of Farmington Valley had a goal of raising $400,000 this year. The exceeded this goal and raised $457,309.99. With the town being 17th best fundraising relay out of the 5000 relays in the United States, the town’s relay continues to be proud of the dedication and support throughout the years.

“Farmington High has been most supportive of Relay For Life. The administration has helped us in every way they can. The student support for the Relay has been outstanding. This year, there were 382 students on 39 teams raising money to support the American Cancer Society,” Team Recruitment and Retention Chair Harvey Dutil said.

At this year’s relay, people participated in activities and had entertainment throughout the day. With a DJ, entertainment from different groups such as dance studios, baton studios, and gymnastics group, a Miss Relay contest, a bounce house and a variety of food, there was always something to do.

“My favorite part of Relay is seeing everyone come together for a common cause,” junior Clare Meehan said.
