As October comes to a close and Halloween draws nearer, eager consumers, like myself, are searching for their final spooky fix before stores replace their skeletons with snowmen.
For this very reason, I was scary excited to try Starbucks latest creation, the Zombie Frappuccino. The drink, which was unveiled last Thursday, has a super-limited-time offering similar to the Unicorn Frapp. With money in hand, and Halloween in my heart, I set out with my dad to try the beverage myself.
Compared to the Unicorn Frappuccino, it has a less distinct flavor and a creepier appearance. That’s probably the most significant way that the Zombie Frappuccino falls short of its predecessor. As the beverage begins to melt — which happens quite quickly — it goes from Frankenstein green to a dirty-zombie-brown. The “blood” mixes with the green Frappuccino to create a murky, muddy drink that’s hardly worth a Snapchat, much less an Instagram.
The Zombie Frappuccino is made with a crème base and features caramel and apple flavors. Once blended, the beverage gets topped with purple-pink whipped cream that’s meant to look like brains, and a mocha drizzle, which is dyed red to look like blood.
At first glance, one might think it is berry flavored due to the abundance of purple hues. However, when you take the first sip, it becomes clear that’s not what’s going on in this creepy cup. Although I didn’t know what to expect from the drink before trying it, the nondescript flavor comes off as milky, yet extremely sweet. The melange of flavors are not overly predominating, and it is clear that this attention grabber doesn’t fully live up to its hype. I noted that the mocha drizzle comes through the most over the caramel apple, which is drowned out under all the ice and milk. The flavor didn’t really do it for me, as so much was going on, and I couldn’t pick up any key flavor. Rather, every sip was something different and not very good.
One thing I did enjoy was the mocha drizzle, as it cut the sweetness of the drink, and provided a much needed flavor boost. For anyone who doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, any size bigger than a tall, might be too much. In fact, I don’t recommend it unless you want a terrifying sugar high.
All in all, while I enjoyed the idea of the Zombie Frappuccino, the product did not thrill me. In the future, I’d like to see a product with a more distinct flavor and a less ghoulish appearance.
